  • The “Art” of Mneme Therapy: How Kim Ingwaldson Makes A Difference Every Day

By Nick on Friday, August 08, 2014

    Art Therapy-01.jpg -

As a talented artist and committed caregiver, Kim Ingwaldson benefits from a seemingly unrelated set of gifts. But last June, Kim stumbled across the opportunity to combine her passion for art and her love for people, kickstarting a new career.

At the time, Kim, a watercolor artist by trade, discovered an ad for an organization called “Art Without Boundaries” (AWB). The pitch sought qualified artists to become trained therapists, with an end goal of using art to help people with brain illness and injury. Kim followed through. And when she met with AWB founder Noelle Hammer, she knew she made the right decision.

“We chatted for hours,” Kim told Karma Wilson, author of No Boundaries! The Art of Mneme Therapy, an article published in 406 Woman Magazine. “She said my combination of skills was perfect for their program, and thought my art was phenomenal.”

After a year of intensive schooling, Kim became Montana’s first certified “Mneme Therapist.” The title, pronounced “Memma Therapist,” describes a professional who uses a “unique, multi-modality process incorporating movement, storytelling, directed painting and praise to achieve sustained focus, which taps into the ability of the brain to heal itself.” On a daily basis, Kim encourages those suffering from dementia, autism, Alzheimer’s, stroke or other brain-related injuries. Along the way, she proudly sports her signature pair of Dansko clogs.

“I spotted Dansko’s Paint Splatter Professional clogs and, as a watercolor artist, I had to buy them. They were just so me,” Kim said. “Most of my clients are wheelchair-bound, and see my shoes first. It makes quite an impression!”

After meeting Kim and her creative Professional clogs, clients begin painting their own works of art. And by works of art, we mean professional-quality landscapes, wildlife scenes, floral arrangements and more. The pieces then travel home with their artist, or feature on calendars, greeting cards and mouse pads for client fundraisers.

Because her clients’ conditions often help them forget about their inhibitions and fears, Kim chooses to see their situation as an opportunity for creativity; they just need someone to open the door for them. Thanks to her beautifully-unique set of gifts, Kim opens doors every day, using her empathetic heart—and her passion for art—to develop optimistic, grateful, and free-spirited artists.

  • Dansko and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation Team Up to "Save the Bay"

By Nick on Monday, July 21, 2014

    SaveTheBayPost-02.jpg -

Often described as a “National Treasure,” the Chesapeake Bay provides water for more than 17 million people. But every day, the Bay also feels the effects of those 17 million people, each of whom live on land that drains into the Bay. At Dansko, we take pride in partnering with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), a nonprofit organization that strives to “Save the Bay” through education, advocacy, litigation and restoration, to improve the health of such an important body of water.

So, as caring shoe people, how do we help “Save the Bay?”

Every summer, a team of Dansko volunteers excitedly heads south to Annapolis, Maryland, to restore oyster gardens in the Chesapeake Bay. This year, our volunteers had the opportunity to get wet—and experience oyster restoration first-hand.
Our journey began in CBF’s Philip Merrill Environmental Center, a worldwide model for energy efficiency, high performance and water conservation. A brief introduction prepared our volunteers for a day aboard the Marguerite, one of CBF’s most advanced research boats. Before long, our volunteers had jumped into the water and begun diving for oysters located in a vulnerable part of the bay, filling bucket after bucket with shelled creatures.

After collecting thousands of oysters, we headed for a safer portion of the bay, where we relocated our oysters in an “oyster garden” for healthy development. CBF will later use our “catch” to replenish the Bay’s declining population of oysters, ultimately restoring a vital habitat for fish and other species.
Our influential (and incredibly fun) project got us thinking: How can others “Save the Bay” in their community, whether they live near an ocean, lake or stream? We asked the Chesapeake Bay Foundation that very same question; check out their practical tips below!

    1. Know your watershed—and share its importance! If you don’t know which watershed you live in, search the internet or take a walk to your local creek. This body of water provides all the water you use in your home. But remember—your actions, and the actions of your community, impact water quality! Stay informed and help others do the same.

    2. Become an informed voter. As an individual, you have the power to take action by voting for thoughtful and responsible land use and conservation policies. When informed voters “flex their political muscle” on behalf of the environment, change happens!

    3. Buy local foods. Most of the food you eat travels 1,300 miles before arriving on your plate. By purchasing food grown on local farms, you can help reduce air pollution, ultimately developing a cleaner, healthier watershed.

    4. Minimize your use of household chemicals. Substitute all-purpose cleaners with baking soda or borax and hot water for everyday cleaning. Natural products reduce toxic chemicals in wastewater, providing a perfect alternative for scrubbing toilets, washing dishes and cleaning counters.

    5. Plant a Tree. In addition to providing the atmosphere with oxygen, trees hold soil in place with their roots, preventing erosion that may run into your watershed. Check out our step-by-step guide to planting a tree—and then make difference in your own yard!

Whether you decide to shop locally, vote responsibly or plant a brand-new tree, we encourage you to adopt these practices. For more information, visit the Chesapeake Bay Foundation at
While our team dove "head first" into the Bay, CBF filmed our restoration efforts. Check out their video below--and listen as Bart Jaeger, Discovery Program Manager, shares the highlights of our volunteer proejct.

  • Cabot Creamery Makes a Difference in Local Communities

By Nick on Friday, June 20, 2014

    CabotPost-01.jpg -

Nearly 100 years ago, when 94 New England farmers purchased a creamery plant to turn excess milk into butter, they held onto a vision beyond farming fame: they wanted to make a difference. Over the ensuing decades, the dairy industry took off in their native Vermont, leading the farmers to hire a cheesemaker to introduce cheese under the Cabot brand name.

Today, Cabot serves as a dairy cooperative owned and operated by its members: dairy farmers and their families throughout New England and Upstate New York. These members have a passion for their communities—and they show it! On May 17, a team of Cabot employees hit the road for the “2014 Cabot Community Tour,” a “celebration of communities doing good.” The tour, which began in Jacksonville, FL and ends tomorrow in New York, NY, honors volunteers and their communities through luncheons, festivals, BBQ picnics and other celebratory events.

This week, when the tour traveled to West Philadelphia, a team of Dansko employees attended in support of their fellow B Corp. The event celebrated volunteers who made the opening of the Philly Pumptrack—a bike circuit of dirt “rollers” or mounds—possible. We jumped right in, showcasing our Spring/Summer 2014 line while celebrating our neighbors for their dedication to West Philadelphia.

For Cabot, however, the end of the Community Tour only serves as the beginning of a passionate year of service. From now until March 25, 2015, the Cabot Team will continue to promote a revolutionary volunteer initiative entitled “Reward Volunteers 5.0.” The year-long campaign rewards volunteers from across the country with a variety of prizes—including cash for nonprofits, vacation packages, gift cards, Dansko shoes, and much more.

By logging volunteer time on the Reward Volunteers iPhone App, or by visiting Reward Volunteers online (as shown on the laptop above), volunteers will earn free rewards for themselves and the organizations they serve. So, what are you waiting for? Download the app, volunteer in your community, and enter to win! Who knows—you just may come home with a new pair of shoes, or a wine weekend getaway, or a Cabot snowboard. And if you do, make sure to thank Cabot for enthusiastically making a difference—and fulfilling a 100-year-old vision.

  • Dansko Volunteers Hit the Road During "Footwear Cares" Month of Service

By Nick on Tuesday, May 13, 2014

    Footwear Cares Blog Post.jpg -

In April, the footwear community united for a powerful cause: a national customer service campaign entitled “Footwear Cares.” The campaign, led by TwoTen Footwear Foundation, an organization that offers charitable assistance to those working in the footwear industry, empowered shoe companies to meaningfully invest in their local communities.

Throughout April, the Dansko team was involved in nine service projects, rolling up their sleeves to support local organizations and branches of national organizations. Their efforts represent a year-round commitment to serving the community, empowering Dansko employees to serve as responsible corporate citizens while supporting the company’s mission of creating a better tomorrow.

Eighty volunteers donated 240 hours of service throughout the campaign, while Dansko donated the equivalent of their salaries to the organizations they supported. This week, we caught up with three of our volunteers to hear their service story.
    Tonya P., Ronald McDonald House
A team of Dansko cooks prepared tasty and nutritious meals for visiting children and their families at the Wilmington, DE Location.
“Because I love to cook, I view making meals as the least I can do for families who are experiencing the unimaginable,” said Tonya P., Sourcing. “My trips to Ronald McDonald House often leave me feeling very emotional. When I get home, I have to hug my children just a little bit tighter.”
Jonathan S., West Grove Garage Community & Youth Center
Volunteers also visited The Garage, an innovative youth center that reaches more than 400 teenagers annually. Our team took part in a spring fundraiser, where we organized and prepared items for a garage sale.

“The opportunity to invest in these kids is so unbelievably rewarding,” said Jonathan S., Product Development. “There’s just something valuable about creating positive change through such a simple transaction.”

    Tara E., Neighborhood Services Center
The Neighborhood Services Center in nearby Oxford, PA works to empower people to achieve health, wholeness and stability. Each year, Dansko employees support an auction and dinner, taking on one of many roles—from organizing volunteers to donating (and sometimes creating) auction items.
“Everyone enjoys this event—it’s very casual, and the food is always delicious,” said Tara E., Customer Service and NSC Board Member. “But everyone attends with the same mindset: we want to ‘pay it forward’ to help NSC continue their good work.”

In 2015, we plan to participate in “Footwear Cares” once again, supporting our community by meaningfully investing in local organizations. But until then, Dansko volunteers will continue to visit our nearby service sites, working to leave a lasting impact.

To learn more about our commitment to serving the community, visit, and be sure to check back often as we share new volunteer stories.

  • A Step-By-Step Guide to Planting your Arbor Day Tree

By Nick on Friday, April 25, 2014

    Arbor-Day-Sketches.jpg -

With a shovel at the ready, we never miss an opportunity to support Stroud Water Research Center in nearby Avondale, Pa. Several times annually, volunteers visit local parks, farms and meadows to drop seedlings and plant trees, supporting researchers as they seek to understand more about local watersheds.

Most recently, on a windy April morning, one team of volunteers visited Stroud Preserve in Marshalton, Pa., while another visited Peacedale Park Preserve in Landenberg, Pa. The teams set out with one mission: to research low-cost alternatives for traditional “forest buffer plantings”—or forested areas that reduce pollution. As it turns out, they exceeded their goal—and had a little fun, too!

“The next time I plant a tree, I will definitely feel confident that it will survive the test of time,” said Dansko volunteer Jerry S. “But I also loved stepping out of the office, serving the environment and working alongside my fellow Dansko employees.”

After planting 400 sycamore and red oak trees, Dansko volunteers placed stakes into the ground just two inches from each tree. The stakes support a tube that surrounds each tree trunk, protecting seedlings from animals while also helping the trees grow vertically.

“I was really impressed with the camaraderie of this group," said Lamonte Garber, Stroud Watershed Restoration Coordinator. "People worked together, tried different jobs and helped each other out; we laughed and had good-natured fun.”

In celebration of Arbor Day, we would like to share our tree-planting passion with this step-by-step guide. Always remember: dig cautiously, water fully and prune selectively. Happy planting!

To learn more about our commitment to serving the community, visit, and be sure to check back often as we share new volunteer stories.
