  • Milestones That Make a Difference

By Brendan Carr on Monday, October 12, 2015

    Milestones-HEAD.jpg -

We’re celebrating milestones throughout October at The Dansko Blog! And since this month marks our 25th Anniversary, the timing is absolutely perfect. This week, we take a look at the many milestones Dansko has reached since launching our volunteer program.

    • Milestones That Make a Difference -

They say that time is the most precious of commodities. It’s the one thing that always seems to be in short supply for everyone. When someone volunteers, they’re giving up something they can never get back – their time.

    • Milestones That Make a Difference -

Why do people freely part with something so valuable? For Dansko volunteers, the answer is simple – we want to leave the world in a better place than we found it.

    • Milestones That Make a Difference -

Volunteering is an official part of our daily life as each employee is given 20 hours of paid volunteer time annually to participate in a number of worthwhile opportunities. If that wasn’t cool enough, Dansko donates the hourly equivalent of each volunteer’s salary to the organization they’re supporting. From planting trees to supporting the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to cooking and serving food at shelters, there is no opportunity that is too great or too small for Dansko volunteers.

    • Milestones That Make a Difference -

Since launching our volunteer initiative nine years ago, the accomplishments have been rewarding – but there is still plenty to do.

    • Milestones That Make a Difference -

Dansko isn’t the only brand that believes volunteering is the right thing to do. Our B Corps friends at Cabot Creamery Cooperative are all about encouraging folks to volunteer. To support all those committed to making the world a better place, Cabot launched the Reward Volunteers program. After registering online, participants can log their volunteer hours for an opportunity to win great prizes like a pair of Dansko shoes.

    • Milestones That Make a Difference -

Let’s all do the right thing. Start making a difference today and you’ll be celebrating your own volunteer milestones tomorrow!

  • Adventures in Volunteering

By Brendan Carr on Tuesday, September 15, 2015

    091615_1.jpg -

Whether you realize it or not, every one of us embarks on a series of adventures every day. We may not be scaling mountains or conquering the open sea, but our daily doings are filled with challenges and interesting activities that are worth celebrating. At Dansko, our everyday adventures often take us beyond our walls and into the community. Come along with us on today’s adventure – corn harvesting!

    • Adventures in Volunteering -

At Dansko, we believe in that old saying: We work hard… but we play hard, too. Balancing work and play helps give everyone at Dansko a healthy outlook and a positive attitude. And as much as that saying is true, it is missing another important fact about Dansko: we volunteer.

    • Adventures in Volunteering -

Each year, Dansko gives all employees 20 hours of paid time off to volunteer in the community. Plus, Dansko donates the hourly equivalent of each participating employee’s salary to the organization for which they volunteer. Although many of our volunteering opportunities involve a great deal of hard work, they’re always interesting, educational, rewarding, and enjoyable experiences. These volunteering adventures give our staff a chance to enjoy time away from the office, bond with their coworkers, and experience the satisfaction of giving back to the community.

One of our most popular volunteer events occurs every fall – corn harvesting. Spearheaded by a group of staffers nicknamed The Corn Crew, this annual event finds these volunteers picking ears of delicious corn in the nearby fields. After the harvesting is over, all of the corn that our crew picked is sorted, boxed and delivered to food relief agencies across our area.

It may be time for us to amend the saying to: We work hard… we play hard… and we give back, too!

  • The Ultimate Nursing School Survival Guide

By Nick on Wednesday, February 11, 2015

    emily1.jpg -

Every day of the week, we strive to make a difference. From cleaning local waterways, to creating a positive workplace culture, to supporting doctors, nurses, chefs, teachers and countless other professionals who spend all day on their feet, our mission runs deeper than simply “making shoes.”

So when we connected with Emily M., a nursing student who relies on Dansko clogs during long clinical hours, we were humbled to hear her story. So humbled, in fact, that we decided to feature her on Word of Foot!

Below, we share a piece of Emily’s background—and offer five "nursing school survival tips" from the expert herself. We hope her story makes a difference in your life, or the life a hard-working colleague. Remember: we’re rooting for you!

    • The Ultimate Nursing School Survival Guide -

      Meet Emily, Nursing Student Extraordinaire

      Hometown: Ames, Iowa
      Academic Level: Junior
Favorite Dansko Style: Black Oiled Professional (they meet my school’s footwear requirements!)

Favorite Aspect of Nursing School: What's unique about my program is its focus on fostering a sense of community. My colleagues and I have been able to help and support one another in order to achieve our ultimate goal of becoming nurses.

Future Nursing Specialty: My nursing program equips students to become RN generalists, so we get a taste of many different specialties. I do not have a specialty picked at the moment; however, I am interested in ER nursing and oncology nursing.
Most Looking Forward To: Making a difference in the physical health of my patients. The concept of helping people heal is so endearing to me!

Emily’s “Ultimate Nursing School Survival Guide”

      1. Count your classmates as your family. In nursing school, you’ve already made the cut. The best way to get through non-stop studying and long clinical hours is to be on the same team as your classmates. Study together. Share the joys and the burdens, and remember: you’re all in the same boat.

      2. Find fresh study spots. To keep studying interesting, we are always on the hunt for new (hip) spots to study. If you can handle a little background noise the possibilities are endless. If not, there is always your local nursing library to fall back on!

      3. Wear Dansko Clogs. Dansko Clogs are definitely essential to being a student nurse. Many nursing programs have specific requirements for shoes, and Dansko meets every one. They are great for your feet, especially during long days of clinicals. We love the shoe so much, my roommates and I named our apartment "The Clog!”

      4. Find access to tacos at midnight. Or really any other incentive to finish studying. Our favorite local taco place is open most nights until 4 a.m. and breakfast tacos are served all day long!

      5. Uncover an outlet for constructive stress relief. When an overwhelming day/week/month happens (and it will), it’s easy to get bogged down and deal with stress in a deconstructive way. Take time to take a couple steps back and remind yourself that grades aren't eternal and there is a bigger purpose amidst the chaos. Running and reflecting are two of my favorite ways to de-stress!

  • Big Game Chili & Cornbread, From King Arthur Flour

By Nick on Thursday, January 29, 2015

    kac1.jpg -

We have to admit: we share countless similarities with King Arthur Flour. They make flour, we make shoes…can you see the resemblance?

…While we may not look similar on the outside, we align with the 225-year-old baking company based on our shared core values. As a 100-percent employee-owned company, a certified B Corporation and a proponent of local volunteerism, King Arthur Flour displays an admirable commitment to their community. So while one company makes flour, and another makes shoes, we work to accomplish the same goal: to become better employers, better community partners and better caretakers of the environment.

And, when we’re feeling especially hungry, we have a habit of visiting their blog, Flourish. Just in time for the second-greatest food holiday of the year, we’d like to share two of our “Big Game” favorites. Go ahead—start cooking!

Oven-Baked Chili and "Just Right" Cornbread
Ahead of the weekend, when couches will seat six and food will freely travel from kitchen to living room, we want to do our part, helping you prepare for the nation’s biggest sports weekend. Head to your local farmer’s market, pick up fresh, local ingredients and fire up the stove—King Arthur Flour’s oven-baked chili and "just right" cornbread will help you celebrate with a delicious home-cooked meal. Let’s get started.
    • Big Game Chili & Cornbread, From King Arthur Flour -

      2 pounds cubed stew beef
      1 1/2 cups (8 ounces) chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
2 cups (15 ounces) chopped tomatoes, fresh or canned
      6-ounce can tomato paste
1 cup (5 ounces) diced fresh green bell pepper
2 tablespoons dried cilantro (optional, but good)
      2 teaspoons chili powder
1 to 2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 to 2 1/2 teaspoons salt, to taste
up to 4 tablespoons sugar, to taste, optional; cuts the acidity of the tomatoes
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground chipotle chili pepper, cayenne pepper, or a dash of hot sauce (optional)
      1 tablespoon cornmeal
      1 cup (8 ounces) water
1 can (15 ounces) dark red kidney beans or black beans, well-drained

In a large skillet, brown the meat in oil, in batches if necessary, and drain it well. Add the chopped onion, and cook until the onion is soft. Add the garlic, tomatoes, tomato paste, peppers, spices, and cornmeal, stirring to combine and allowing to simmer for about 1 minute, just 'till everything is hot.
Spoon the chili into an ovenproof 2 to 2 1/2-quart crock or casserole dish; add sufficient water to cover the meat. Cover the dish, with a lid or foil, and bake the chili in a preheated 275°F oven for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until the meat is tender. Stir the chili after 1 hour, adding a bit of beef stock or water if most of the liquid has evaporated, and it seems dry.
Half an hour before serving, stir in the beans, and cook until heated through. Garnish the chili with fresh cilantro and sour cream (with a bit of lime zest added to it), if desired.
      Yield: 8 to 10 servings.
    • Big Game Chili & Cornbread, From King Arthur Flour -

1 3/4 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
      1 cup cornmeal
      2 teaspoons baking powder
      1 1/4 cups milk
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
      1 largre egg

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Lightly grease a 9" square or round pan (a cast iron skillet will work fine, too), shallow 1 1/2 quart casserole dish, or 12 muffin cups.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Stir in any desired herbs, cheese, corn kernels, or other flavorings.

In another bowl or large measuring cup, whisk together the milk, melted butter, vegetable oil (if you're using it), and egg.

Pour the liquid all at once into the flour mixture, stirring quickly and gently until just combined.

Spread the batter into the prepared pan, or scoop into the muffin tin.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the edges just begin to pull away from the pan and a cake tester or paring knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and cool on a rack for 5 minutes before cutting; serve warm.

      Yield: 9-11 biscuits

  • Five Uncommon Resolutions for 2015

By Nick on Wednesday, January 07, 2015

    5common-01.jpg -

At Dansko, we strive to leave a lasting impact. Whether cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay or designing all-day comfort shoes, we aim to positively influence our neighbors (and our neighbor’s neighbors). This pursuit got us thinking: what uncommon New Year’s resolutions could we practice in 2015? We developed a list of five difference-making ideas below. Take a look—and commit to one, two or all five!

    • Five Uncommon Resolutions for 2015 -
      1. Double Up On Dinner. On nights when you plan your favorite meal—the dish that wows guests and excites family members—double your recipe and donate the second half to a local charity. Start by committing to a monthly donation, and then gradually ramp up your schedule to include two-to-three donations per month. From soup kitchens to food rescues, you’ll never be short on grateful recipients of your delicious dinner staple.
    • Five Uncommon Resolutions for 2015 -

      2. Invest In A Local Nonprofit. In many cases, time separates enthusiastic volunteers from enthusiastically volunteering. The solution? Grab your calendar and start small. Nonprofits appreciate consistency, making a two-hour monthly commitment a valuable use of your time (and theirs!). Give tours at a museum or arboretum, read books to children at your local library or help tend to a nearby community garden. Regardless of the organization or cause you chose, stick to it--volunteering requires resiliency!

    • Five Uncommon Resolutions for 2015 -

      3. Save For The Less Fortunate. Every time you receive an unexpected gift, or stumble across unexpected savings, use your good fortune to serve others. Start by designating an envelope or box for your “philanthropy fund”; gradually stuff bills, checks and change inside. Set a goal, stick to it and then research a worthy organization or cause. Once you reach your goal, donate your “spare change” to an organization of choice, making a significant difference in the life of a less-fortunate family.

    • Five Uncommon Resolutions for 2015 -

      4. Clean Out Your Closet. The phrase, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” often holds true—especially when it comes to our closets. Sort through your clothes, electronics and other household goods and think about the last time you wore or used an item. If you can’t remember, you can probably afford to make a donation! Start a pile and take some risks—you may not miss that sweater, or that scarf, as much as you think.

    • Five Uncommon Resolutions for 2015 -

      5. Organize A Nature Walk. On a pleasant winter morning, grab a handful of your closest friends and go on a nature walk in your local park. In addition to soaking up the beautiful scenery, soak up the not-so-beautiful scenery—wrappers, soda cans, milk cartons. Hand each person a large trash bag and collect any unsightly items as you go. The park will appreciate your service, even if they never knew you came!
