Many FanDanskos volunteer at their children’s schools performing a variety of services that the kids love. Here are some of the ways that FanDanskos give back to their local communities.
Michael G., Canton, MS
I worked with our local Keep America Beautiful affiliation to promote recycling in our community. We picked up litter around town and planted flowers and trees to beautify our city.
Stephanie B., Gresham, OR
I volunteer for Skate Church in Portland, OR. It is a non-profit that gets kids off the streets to skate. In the fall and winter it gets cold and wet, so a dry safe place to skate is a must. We have four nights for kids to come: Jr. high, High School, pee wee and rotation Friday night late nighter. I work with the high school, the kids are great and come from all backgrounds. I mainly do registration and office stuff but once in a blue moon I do medical duty. Right now we are rent a small warehouse but our dream is to get one that is 10 times bigger and incorporates all of the Northwest loves: rock climbing, skateboarding and BMX.
Debbie D., St Augustine, FL
I volunteer for American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer by updating their website weekly and offering online support for team members. I also volunteer at the Florida School for Deaf and Blind which is an extremely rewarding experience.
Amy N., Cambridge, NY
I volunteer at a local church preparing and serving meals for elderly people in our town. I feel I am giving back to them as I know so many of them helped make our neighborhood a great place. I like volunteering, it's good for the soul. It makes me feel happy to see other people smile. My two boys work at the dinners when their sports don't interfere. My Danskos allow me to stay on my feet for hours without my feet or back hurting.
Edna H., MD
I volunteer for a Dyslexia Tutoring Program. My job is one-on-one with a 10-year-old child who has learning disabilities and struggles to keep up with his class. Although I am a Dentist and made it through my own education, I struggled and it did not come easy. My student made great strides last year as he raised his test scores considerably and he now reads chapter books. I am not sure that I am that good of a teacher but I feel that I have empowered him to believe in himself. That is what is important to me.
Suzanne H., Big Rapids, MI
My husband's office closes for the day every year and he takes his staff (of which I am a member) to work on a Habitat for Humanity
house. This year we put vinyl siding on a house and finished it in a day. It's amazing how much a small team can accomplish.
