• Earth Day 2014: Five Steps for Conserving Water at Home

Around this time of year, April showers tend to become a topic of conversation. In southeastern Pennsylvania, we set umbrellas, rain jackets and comfortable boots by the door, braving the wet weather that becomes so common. But at Dansko, we see rain as something entirely different—as a way to power our toilets. Glamorous, right?

How does rain power our toilets, you may ask? The process starts with copper rain chains (shown in the photo below). Instead of traditional gutters, we use our rain chains to transport water from our vegetated roof to a 10,000-gallon holding tank. The tank, then, sends water to a pump room, which filters and cleans water in preparation for its next big job. These jobs range from flushing toilets to watering plants, and work to eliminate dependence on our local watershed. What starts as a nuisance suddenly becomes a lifeline.

While we realize that not everybody uses rain chains, we believe that everybody can conserve water. How, you may ask (once again)? By following these suggestions—or by researching others that work for your lifestyle! In honor of Earth Day 2014, we gathered five straightforward methods for conserving water in your home:

    1. Set up a gardening rain barrel: Purchase a rain barrel from your neighborhood hardware store. When you would normally use water from a hose, place a watering can under the barrel instead!

    2. Review the landscaping in your yard: Thoughtful landscaping can instantly help your water conservation efforts. Consider sticking to native plants that don’t require watering, and be sure to use mulch and compost to retain water and prevent erosion.

    3. Clean your neighborhood catch basins: At times, trash and other debris can clog your local catch basin. Help out your neighbors—and help water flow with ease—by removing the clutter!

    4. Start a compost pile: By composting leftovers instead of sending them down the garbage disposal, you conserve water and reduce septic tank problems. Over time, eliminate the use of your disposal all together.

    5. Replace your old toilet: Out-dated toilets use significantly more water than newer, more efficient models. It might be time to add a toilet to your shopping list!

We invite you to join us in protecting the environment, one rain drop at a time!

As pioneers of non-GMO baking flour, and as the creators of a mouth-watering blog, King Arthur Flour has influenced the food industry for more than 223 years. For those counting, that’s more than two centuries! Along the way, the Vermont-based company has developed an influential model for social responsibility, consistently investing in its employees, its customers and the natural environment.

At Dansko, we can relate. King Arthur Flour serves as a certified B Corp, joining Dansko and a group of other like-minded businesses who are committed to redefining success in business. The company also benefits from 100% employee ownership, sharing our value of creating a healthy, prosperous tomorrow.

So, how do feet and flour get along? By sharing, of course! We partnered with King Arthur Flour to feature one of our favorite recipes, offering the tastes of spring in a delicious loaf of broad. We hope you enjoy!

    • Recipe Time: A Sweet Spring Treat from King Arthur Flour -

      INGREDIENTS:

      Dough
      • 4 tablespoons butter
      • 1 cup milk
      • 4 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
      • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
      • 1/3 cup sugar
      • 1 teaspoon salt
      • 2 large eggs plus 1 yolk (save the white for glaze)
      • 1 1/2 teaspoons Buttery Sweet Dough Flavor or 1/8 teaspoon coconut flavor or 1/4 teaspoon orange oil or Fiori di Sicilia
      • 1 cup (5 ounces) King Arthur Flour Tropical Fruit Blend, or a mixture of your favorite dried fruits

      Toppings
      • 1/4 cup sugar
      • 1/3 cup King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
      • 2 tablespoons butter

      DIRECTIONS:

      1) Melt the butter with the milk and let the mixture cool to lukewarm

      2) Combine the milk mixture with the remaining dough ingredients, except the fruit, and mix and knead to make a soft dough.

      3) Knead in the fruit.

      4) Allow dough to rise, covered, for 1 1/2 hours, or until it becomes puffy and nearly doubles in size.

      5) Deflate the dough. Divide it into six pieces, shaping each into a ball; or divide dough in half, shaping each half into an 8” log.

      6) Place in six lightly greased 1 3/4-cup rectangular bakers, or two 8 1/2” x 4 1/2” loaf pans.

      7) Let rise, covered, for about 1 1/2 hours, till crowned about 1” over the rims of the pans. Just before the end of the rising time, preheat the oven to 350°F.

      8) Beat the reserved egg white, and brush over the tops of the loaves.

      9) Mix the topping ingredients until crumbly, and sprinkle on top.

      10) Bake the bread for 25 to 30 minutes, until lightly browned.

      11) Remove from the oven, turn out of the pans, and cool completely on a rack.

      12) For prettiest presentation, return small loaves to their pans just before serving.

  • Volunteers Leave a SPLASHing Impact

    Splash_Safety_Images_006.jpg - Dansko employee lends a hand

Here at Dansko, we believe in the power of rolling up our sleeves, getting our hands dirty and inspiring others to get involved. So, when we saw an opportunity to support our local YMCA’s SPLASH program, an initiative that teaches third-graders about the importance of water safety, we dove in head first.

On a chilly Tuesday morning this winter, Dansko volunteer Melissa S. noticed two boys who tentatively approached the diving block. Melissa saw their fear as an opportunity to make a positive impact—and her initiative paid off.  “Wow, I did it!” one of the boys said after plunging into the water. “Now I want to be an Olympic diver. I can jump off this thing!”

For the rest of the morning, Melissa’s new friends and their classmates swam from one station to the next, working to develop their water skills. Although the folks from Dansko left the true instruction to the professionals, we like to think that our team inspired this group of up-and-coming swimmers.

“It was so cute to see these students navigate new challenges, and to watch as their spirits soared and confidence rose,” Melissa said. “I enjoy taking time out of my busy day to help others—especially kids!”

For Melissa and the rest of the Dansko team, investing in others serves as a way of life; we don’t know any other way. We believe in giving back to the communities of which we are a part, even when it means getting wet for 168 youngsters. While the gift of time is important, Dansko also kicks in by making a monetary donation to the organization too. Double the bang for the buck!

“We wouldn’t be able to provide such great opportunities without the generosity of our volunteers,” said Nic Legere, YMCA Senior Program Director, “and we're fortunate to have Dansko assist our third graders during this year’s SPLASH program.”

Will you join us? We encourage you to choose a person, cause or organization, to uncover a need, and invest in positive change. Sometimes, the simplest action can make the greatest difference.

To learn more about our commitment to taking action in our community, visit Dansko.com and continue to join us here as we share more volunteer stories.
