• Runway Rundown: Q&A with Designer Karolyn Pho

By Diana on Monday, September 22, 2014

    Karolyn Pho-01.jpg -

Young, creative and inspired by her surroundings, fashion designer Karolyn Pho strives to achieve a delicate balance between an artful, avant-garde ideal and the ease of classic American design. Her Spring/Summer 2015 collection, entitled Vagabond, accomplishes this goal…

…and just so happens to showcase Dansko footwear!

During her New York Fashion Week presentation at Pier 59 Studios, located on the Hudson River in Chelsea, New York City, Karolyn featured 26 different looks, each sporting clean whites, fun pops of color and oversized accessories. White clogs from our Stapled collection, including Ingrid, Sonja and the Professional, added a classic, minimalistic touch, one that Karolyn called “a huge statement piece” while remaining “subtle.”

We caught up with Karolyn to learn more about her fashion expertise—and her passion for Dansko clogs.

Q: How does the title Vagabond describe your SS15 collection?
A: The collection this season is more utilitarian and functional in its silhouettes. That ease and wearability helps to evoke the vagabond spirit.

Q: What inspired Vagabond’s color palette?
A: The color palette was inspired by Art Deco Architecture of South Florida in the 60's-- there's a mixing and matching of pastels and pops of neon.

Q: How can fashion tell a story?
A: Fashion is cinematic by nature. It can literally place you in a specific world at a specific time and give insight into a character's person … all without saying one word.

Q: Describe your personal style in five words or less.
A: Elevated classic with a personal quirk.

Q: Name one accessory you never leave home without.
A: My tennis bracelet and my gold thumb band. The ring was my mother's 'lucky' ring which she wore when her and my father started their first business.

Q: Name one location or setting that never ceases to provide inspiration.
    A: New York City

Q: How did our Ingrid, Sonja and Professional clogs enhance your collection’s aesthetic?
A: The clog style footwear was my homage to 90's fashion. They were a huge statement piece in my runway showing, yet subtle enough to not distract from the clothing.

    Q: Why Dansko?
A: Dansko is a household name for clogs. Every one of my friends has owned a pair of Dansko shoes at some point in their life—they’re a classic!

  • The “Art” of Mneme Therapy: How Kim Ingwaldson Makes A Difference Every Day

By Nick on Friday, August 08, 2014

    Art Therapy-01.jpg -

As a talented artist and committed caregiver, Kim Ingwaldson benefits from a seemingly unrelated set of gifts. But last June, Kim stumbled across the opportunity to combine her passion for art and her love for people, kickstarting a new career.

At the time, Kim, a watercolor artist by trade, discovered an ad for an organization called “Art Without Boundaries” (AWB). The pitch sought qualified artists to become trained therapists, with an end goal of using art to help people with brain illness and injury. Kim followed through. And when she met with AWB founder Noelle Hammer, she knew she made the right decision.

“We chatted for hours,” Kim told Karma Wilson, author of No Boundaries! The Art of Mneme Therapy, an article published in 406 Woman Magazine. “She said my combination of skills was perfect for their program, and thought my art was phenomenal.”

After a year of intensive schooling, Kim became Montana’s first certified “Mneme Therapist.” The title, pronounced “Memma Therapist,” describes a professional who uses a “unique, multi-modality process incorporating movement, storytelling, directed painting and praise to achieve sustained focus, which taps into the ability of the brain to heal itself.” On a daily basis, Kim encourages those suffering from dementia, autism, Alzheimer’s, stroke or other brain-related injuries. Along the way, she proudly sports her signature pair of Dansko clogs.

“I spotted Dansko’s Paint Splatter Professional clogs and, as a watercolor artist, I had to buy them. They were just so me,” Kim said. “Most of my clients are wheelchair-bound, and see my shoes first. It makes quite an impression!”

After meeting Kim and her creative Professional clogs, clients begin painting their own works of art. And by works of art, we mean professional-quality landscapes, wildlife scenes, floral arrangements and more. The pieces then travel home with their artist, or feature on calendars, greeting cards and mouse pads for client fundraisers.

Because her clients’ conditions often help them forget about their inhibitions and fears, Kim chooses to see their situation as an opportunity for creativity; they just need someone to open the door for them. Thanks to her beautifully-unique set of gifts, Kim opens doors every day, using her empathetic heart—and her passion for art—to develop optimistic, grateful, and free-spirited artists.

  • "America's Best Cook" Contestant Presses Onward – In Dansko Clogs!

By Diana on Tuesday, April 29, 2014

    ChristinaPost.jpg -

Christina Verrelli grew up shadowing her mom in the kitchen: reading cookbooks, studying recipes and clipping coupons for upcoming market trips. Today, the passionate home cook is a contestant on the Food Network show “America’s Best Cook”—and hopes to ride her Dansko clogs to victory!

On the show, Verrelli uses her best recipes to impress a panel of celebrity judges, including Bobby Flay, Anne Burrell and Geoffrey Zakarian. An enthusiasm for homestyle cooking has helped Verrelli win countless contests, including a million-dollar Pillsbury bake-off in 2012, though “America’s Best Cook” represents her toughest competition yet.

“I’m not one of those super-aggressive, trash-talking competitors…I usually end up making friends with everyone,” Verrelli said. “But I’m definitely competitive against myself. I don’t have to win, but I want to do the best that I can do!”

At home, Verrelli cooks savory stews, homemade soups, delicious pot pies, and other hearty meals, though she enjoys cooking new recipes as much as perfecting old ones. If she can learn to prepare a series of unfamiliar dishes—like a dessert that incorporates bacon—she will have a shot at winning the grand prize of $50,000.

“Through all of my contests, I love learning and experimenting with different ingredients and techniques,” Verrelli continued. “Of course, I don’t win every contest I enter—but I do learn something from every dish I create.”

In order to prevent tired feet, sore legs and an aching back, Verrelli wears Dansko clogs, her “go-to kitchen shoes.” She plans to wear her Black Cherry Professional clogs from start to finish.

“Participating in ‘America’s Best Cook’ is hands down the craziest thing I’ve ever done in my Dansko clogs,” Verrelli concluded. “I cannot believe the running, jumping, leaping and messy cooking that I’ve done!”

When Verrelli returns from her TV debut, she will continue to share recipes through her blog “Epicuricloud.” From toffee bar cookies to Cincinnati Chili, Verrelli offers a little something for everyone.  We have to warn you, though—avoid visiting her blog or watching “America’s Best Cook” on an empty stomach. Verrelli’s meals will send you running for the kitchen!

Watch Verrelli compete for the Food Network crown at 9 p.m. on Sunday evenings.

In 2008, Goin and business partner Caroline Styne launched the Larder Baking Company, a wholesale bakery that distributes tasty artisan breads to restaurants and bakeries nationwide.

In the March issue of Wall Street Journal Magazine, Goin appeared in a feature story about her bakery, sporting her signature Dansko Professional clogs for the Magazine’s photo shoot.

  • Suits, Sweaters and Dansko: Q&A with New York Designer Drew Villani

By Diana on Friday, March 21, 2014

    fashionweek.jpg -

When New York City designer Drew Villani unveiled his men’s line “Dreu” during 2014 New York Fashion Week, he selected Dansko clogs as the collection’s featured footwear. Villani paired three styles from our Stapled Clog collection with contemporary sweaters, suits and t-shirts, working to maintain Dreu’s clean, minimal, beautiful look. We caught up with Villani following his Fashion Week presentation to learn more about the Australian-born designer.

Q: What is your favorite fabric and why?

A: Cashmere. It’s a beautiful fabric, but it also ages very well, developing natural pills and balls. I think you just need to embrace those things.

Q: List your top three wardrobe staples.

A: Vintage Levi Jeans, an overcoat and a plain t-shirt.

Q: If you could shake hands with one designer, who would it be?

A: Phoebe Philo, British designer from Celine, a French luxury house.

Q: What item belongs in every man’s closet?

    A: A plain white t-shirt.

Q: Can you describe the best and worst fashion trends of your lifetime?

A: I was a skater growing up, so I wore the low-hanging, baggy pants with an XXL t-shirt. At the time, I thought this look was very cool. Thankfully, when I got my first job in retail, which was specifically with suiting and tailored goods, I learned to step up my style a bit.

Q: If you had to place your collection into one time period, which would it be?

A: Today – I see Dreu as a modern collection.

Q: What was your childhood dream job?

A: I was always very into sports, so I grew up playing a lot of basketball. Like many young kids, my dream was to play in the NBA.

Q: Name your favorite New York City restaurant.

A: Café Minerva in the West Village. When I first moved to New York, this was my spot—I would always stop to read and gather my thoughts.
